Councillor Adam Gregg, alongside Cllr Martyn Bolt, is championing a crucial campaign to safeguard the future of Kirklees’ libraries amidst proposed cost-cutting measures by the Labour-run council. The plan, which threatens to cut 47 jobs, suggests transitioning the management of eight libraries, including Mirfield and Kirkheaton to volunteer groups—a move that could compromise service quality and overburden volunteers.
At a recent cabinet meeting on Tuesday 20th February, Cllr Gregg presented a compelling case to the Labour leadership, emphasising the distinction between volunteering a few hours and the extensive responsibilities of managing a library’s operations and finances.
“Libraries are more than just book repositories; they are vibrant community hubs that foster learning, connection, and growth,” stated Cllr Gregg. “It is imperative that we maintain professional staffing where viable and reconsider the shift towards volunteer-run models.”
The petition launched by Adam Gregg seeks to rally public support to keep Kirklees Libraries professionally staffed and resist the proposed management changes. By signing the petition, residents can voice their support for preserving the high standards of service that libraries provide and ensure they remain a vital public resource for generations to come.
